I cocked my head, listening to the sounds of the forest around me. One could hear so much if they simply shut up, turned off the electronics, and paid attention. There. Ducking lower underneath the rock overhand, I peered from the branches of the hibernating bush in front of me. Hearing raised voices, I couldn't stop the small grin from curving my lips. Adjusting the small rifle in my lap, I shifted to get a little more comfortable. It would take awhile for them to untangle the mess I'd made.
Of course I'd found the traps. They'd been killing for sport and leaving the carcasses behind to rot after taking the head or furs. I didn't mind people that killed for nourishment and sustenance. Those that did, did so with respect and integrity. Sport hunters however, really irked me. There simply was no reason for it. Especially when they used the damn leg traps. It left the animal suffering, fighting and panicking for days until the hunters got their asses back out. It was despicable.
I'd gone through the area, combing over every square foot. Once I'd set off each with a heavy staff, I'd strung them together with chains, and had used my powers to call the tree to bend forward to me. Their dozen or so traps were now chained and dangling from the top of a 60ft cypress tree. The trunk wasn't wide enough to safely climb, which left them in a quandary. The traps were expensive, and wouldn't be left behind. Yet they had no idea how they'd gotten up there or how in the world they'd be able to get them down. The thought almost had a giggle escaping.
Scooting further back into the rock crevasse, I laid the rifle next to me as I stretched, flexing my toes in the thick soled boots I wore. This was the third set of trophy hunters that I'd had to chase out of here. Those hunting for food, I left alone. The others usually ran from the area, screaming that it was haunted or cursed. When people were afraid, they tended not to come back. That suited this Elemental just fine.
